If you have entered the final month of your pregnancy, you would now be fretting over labor and delivery. It is better to know beforehand various positions you could be into while in labor to be comfortable and ease you pain. You could adopt any of the following labor positions and even vary from one to another if you feel comfortable doing so. Labor positions also depend on your medical conditions, whether or not you are taking an epidural or if you are being monitored.
Make Sure You Are Allowing Gravity To Bring Your Baby Down Towards The Birth Canal
You can choose to sit comfortably on a bed or a chair. Sitting on a birthing ball can also prove to be easy as it opens up the pelvis. If you are having back ache, lean forward a little and let your labor partner give you a back massage. This would further ease the pain of labor.
This could prove to be one of the best labor positions for swift delivery. It lets the pelvis to open faster, thereby bringing the baby down more quickly and hence is recommended more often. You could be feeling weak and tired, so make sure you squat using a strong support.
It turns out to be a good position as it uses gravity to its advantage. Standing also safeguards from putting additional pressure on any other parts of your body. Walking in between the contractions is also effective as it takes the mind off the labor. You may also bend forwards against a wall to ease the pain during contractions. However, in case of water burst, the doctor may advise against standing or walking.
4. Hands And Knees
Positioning yourself on all fours like a crawl is a generally used for more comfort and convenience. It gives relief from your back pain. Combining this with pelvic tilts will not only give you comfort, but also make the pelvis open up promptly.
The ‘kneel down’ position with support of a chair or bed is a great position in case you are having a back labor. This position also releases pressure off your spine and aids in bring the baby downwards. It is better to put a pillow below so as to avoid hurting your knees.
6. Side Lying
If you need to rest during labor, this position is the best. Avoid lying on your back as it compresses the vein in your back which affects the blood flow to the baby. Just lie down on your left or right to relax while in labor. This position also helps in slowing down a birth process if it is moving too fast. The only disadvantage is it does not get gravity to its help.
7. Lithotomy Or Supine
Lying on back with knees bend upwards is yet another position which is generally preferred when continuous monitoring is required. Though it reduces blood supply to the baby and works against gravity, this position is also used and adopted quite often during childbirth.
It will be good to keep in mind that no one position is best. What is comfortable in early stage of labor might be depressing in the later stage. You may prefer your position according to your comfort and your practitioner’s advise for a healthy and speedy delivery.
