Parenting has been a great challenge in the current society due to busy work schedule of parents and especially when it comes with an infant, where a lot of extra care is required, the job can be labelled as the toughest. Immune systems for less than one year babies are not so well developed so that it can stand against the cold infections and diseases. They also are not able to communicate the problems they are facing. The climate changes might make the baby uncomfortable. Also baby skin is delicate and faces lot difficulties to adjust to the chilly weather. Babies, aging less than 1 year, are not well exposed to all the season and hence a lot extra attention. However, it does not mean that they should be kept inside the house during whole winter.
We Have Discussed A Few Tips Below Which Could Be Useful To Take Care Of Less Than Old Babies During The Winter:
1. Clothing For Warmth
Unlike adults, infants feel much discomfort during the cold weather due to their tender and delicate skin. This can be taken care using several layers of winter clothing. When you are taking your baby outside make sure that the baby is wearing mittens, socks and winter caps. Usually babies catch cold if their heads are not covered. So take extra care when choosing a winter cap for your baby. Make sure that the chest is well covered while taking the baby outside. However, when inside the house keeps a check on the room temperature and use layers of clothes accordingly. Keep an eye if the baby is sweating, since extra clothing might make the baby sweat and the baby might catch cold from that.
2. Bathing Tips
Baby skin gets dry and itchy during the winter. As per doctor’s advice the bathing time should be limited to not more than 10 minutes and use Luke warm water for bathing. During the bath make sure that the room or bathroom temperature is soothing. Doctors also advise not to use soap during the winter. Soft cleansers could be used instead.
3. Moisturising Need
Baby skin is very soft and thin. It is in the process of nourishing with the environment. During the winter season the baby skin gets very dry. So their skin needs extra moisture. Instead of wiping fully soon after the bath, pat your baby’s skin with a dry towel so the moisture gets soaked in their skin. After bath, apply a nice moisturising cream. You can also apply a soft baby oil in their skin before bath. This will help the baby skin to retain the moisture.
4. Room Temperature
Maintain the room temperature inside your house to keep the baby warm. Do not keep the doors or windows open during the evening or night. So that the cold air from outside does not get in. If you are using a room heater make sure that the baby is fine with the temperature i.e. it is neither very hot nor cold for the baby. Room heaters make the skin very dry, so make sure that you apply proper lotions or ointments to keep your baby skin well moisturized. You can apply moisturisers to your baby’s skin before turning on the heater.
A good oil massage before bath is good for the baby skin. It moisturizes, improves the blood circulation in the body and keeps the baby warm. However, do not use too many baby products else that can affect the baby skin.
