Dehydration is never good and during pregnancy it can cause further problems such as cramps and a heavy head. Majority of women are of the notion that drinking plenty of water during pregnancy can lead to inflammation and swelling up of the belly but that isn’t the case so. As a pregnant woman, they require more water than an average person, as water plays an important role in the healthy development of the baby. To add on to the same, water helps to form the placenta, which is what the baby inside the womb relies on to receive nutrients during pregnancy. Water is also used to form the amniotic sac later on in the stages of pregnancy. Therefore, it is important to avoid dehydration during pregnancy.
Let Us See Some Of The Ways By Which Water Is Retained In The Body And Avoid Any Complication That May Arise Thereafter:
1. Drinking Plenty Water
Of course, this had to be on the top of the list. Drinking enough water helps in better digestion and avoids overheating of the body, which is the sole purpose why the body is subjected to dehydration. Make sure that a woman going through pregnancy consumes at least 8-12 glasses of water to avoid overheating of the body.
2. Avoid Alcohol
Even though it is a kind of liquid being taken in, nevertheless, alcohol is one of the major reasons for dehydration. In fact, forget consuming alcohol because of dehydration as alcohol intake can be hazardous for both the mother and child in this period.
3. Exercise Indoors
The reason why a laboring woman is asked to keep moving is to avoid cramps or swelling up of the belly because of immobility. Exercising here doesn’t mean hardcore burning of calories in the sun which could lead to excessive sweating. Sweating though healthy for the skin in normal course, but here during pregnancy, it is just another way of losing water from the body. Therefore, try to keep your mild exercises indoors to avoid any extra loss of water and moving at the same time.
One great way to reduce the swelling and keep your body active is by going for a swim. The coolness of water would be relieving against the swelling while activity of such sort can be great for water retention. Soaking yourself in a tub (if there is no access to a swimming pool) can be an alternative to cool your body down.
5. Coconut Water And Juices
Coconut water is the best fluid intake that a woman can take in such circumstances. Coconut water is rich in potassium that helps removing all the sodium away from the body and in addition, coconut water is a rich supplement to water. It helps in easy passage of urea and supplies various nutrients to the unborn. Have 2-3 coconut water daily. Juices may also have similar characteristics but beware of the extra calories that it might contain.
6. Avoid High Protein Diets
High protein diet is a major reason for draining all the water away from your body. Protein help in burning calories and water secreting out for the same purpose is must. Although protein is required by both the mother and the child, high and intense protein diet is also not recommended. But in cases when the doctor prescribed you a diet rich in protein, consume more water i.e. increase the number of glasses of water from 12- 15 in normal course.
Eatables like cucumber, tomatoes, watermelons and grapes have high content of water. These also help in hydration of the body overall. Apart from the same, these will not cause constipation, digests easily and provides all the other nutrients especially needed by the child in the womb.
8. Avoid Coffee Or Tea
Caffeinated beverages, such as coffee, colas and teas can be included as part of your fluid intake if you drink no more than two to three cups in a day. Caffeine has a diuretic effect that can actually remove water from your body if consumed above the imit.
9. Carry A Water Bottle
Always remember to carry a water bottle. While going out or travelling out, water should be on the top of the list while doing so. It also solves the issues related to clean water which may not be found especially while travelling.
10. Wear Lightweight And Cotton Clothes
Lightweight clothes help you feel comfortable and wouldn’t put any pressure on your body. Also wearing cotton clothes help in absorbing sweat thereby reducing overheating of the body.
